About us

SunDrive is an Australian solar technology start-up. Our mission is to unlock the full potential of solar by developing unique ways to enhance solar cell efficiencies whilst also reducing production costs. SunDrive was founded in 2015 and is backed by some of Australia’s top venture capital firms and technology founders, as well as the Australian Government. Since launching, SunDrive has grown from a small PhD project in a garage to producing some of the most efficient solar cells in the world. Originally from Wollongong, we are now based in the south Sydney suburb of Kirrawee to scale our operations. To fast track our development, we are looking for more exceptional individuals to design, build, and program robots to automate our solar cell fabrication process.

Skills & Experience

  • Minimum 3 years of industry experience as an engineer working in a design role.

  • Strong mechanical design experience, including CAD (SolidWorks experience is preferable), GD&T, DFA and DFM.

  • Experience designing for prototype manufacturing processes (e.g. FDM, SLS, hand tools, power tools, Laser Cutting, CNC Machining, vacuum forming etc).

  • Experience with analytical methods of tolerance analysis, fluid dynamics and thermal analysis.

  • Demonstrated ability to drive a project from conceptualisation through numerous design and testing cycles to release.

  • Proven capability to work on multifaceted projects that involve aspects of mechanical, electrical, software, optical and chemical engineering in a multidisciplinary team environment.

  • Experience communicating with suppliers and manufacturers.

About you

  • Above all, honest, dependable, empathetic and a person of integrity.

  • Hands-on. You’ll be expected to immerse yourself in our workshop, building the machines you design, as well as optimising and debugging  them.

  • Able to articulate problems to others and can communicate your thoughts openly and objectively.

  • Natural at tackling problems from first principles.

  • Thirst for learning and developing new skills beyond your comfort zone.

  • History of tinkering and building things from the ground up.

  • Able to cope with long periods of hardware/software design iterations.

  • Team player but can also work alone with original thought to overcome complex problems with limited resources.

  • A natural in seeing the finer details. You need to be able to spot small subtleties and intricacies in our solar cell fabrication process.

  • Adaptable to shifting priorities and changing directions to align with the company’s development plan.

Your Mission

  • Design and construct production machines to automate our solar cell fabrication process. Our process is radically different, and all critical components are built from the ground up here in Sydney. This involves extensive mechanical design, electrical design, programming, and systems integration.

  • Rapidly conceptualise, test, document and evaluate novel approaches to various steps in the solar cell fabrication process.

  • Assist in maintaining and upgrading current lab processing automation equipment.

  • Perform common machining and workshop fabrication processes. i.e drilling, sawing, cutting, tapping, PCB assembly, cable making, soldering etc.

  • Most importantly, add capability to what the team can achieve. With every recruit, we will be upping the ante and raising the bar.

Bonus Points

  • Experience in the industrial automation and manufacturing industry (e.g. design of manufacturing automation products or dealing with customers involved in automation).

  • Previously worked in a start-up.

  • Experience with hands on electronics.

  • Programming experience (Python, C/C++, MATLAB) and experience with running applications on embedded computers (Raspberry Pi).

  • Genuine interest in clean technology and the environment.

On Offer

  • Join one of the world’s top solar technology start-ups while the team size is still small.

  • Work with some of the world’s top solar cell builders.

  • Located at the heart of Sutherland Shire with plenty of street parking and a 15min walk to Kirrawee train station.

  • Fully stocked kitchen and pantry containing a wide variety of snacks, drinks, and hot sauces.
